Starting Out

The web is a great tool for learning, and also a great tool for wasting time. Tonight, it's been mostly a time-waster. Nothing new on Drudge, except that John Edwards drinks a LOT of Diet Coke. I came into a few hundred dollars from the casino last night, so I have been cruising eBay looking for bargains. Do I really want a handheld GPS? I'd really like to have a good reel-to-reel tape recorder, possibly to use in copying all the tapes I've saved over the years before there are no more tape recorders left to play them on.

So... it's been a lot of random surfing, going wherever the next interesting link takes me. I was downloading some e-books from the library, and found that (a) I didn't have Adobe Reader registered on my Palm for e-books, and (b) the library changed from Palm Reader to something called Mobipocket reader, so I had to go download that and learn how to use it.

I'm not sure what I'll do with this blog. Something, I hope. I need to write, and I want to write. But when I actually START to write, I'm overwhelmed with the dreadful feeling that no one would EVER be interested in any of this stuff. But cross your fingers that I have the discipline to lay down a paragraph or two on a more or less regular basis. I may not get any readers, but it'll make me feel better.
Why "Starbase 12?" Well, my more clever choices were already taken. And I'm a Star Trek fan, so Starbase seemed harmless enough. I would have liked a title like "Number Six" or "The Village" but those were already taken.

The whole idea of blogging seems kind of egotistical to me. I have a healthy enough ego, but I'm not really in to pushing my ideas onto others. As time goes on, we'll see.

I guess I will start with a diary format, with occasional essays or editorials about what I'm thinking or doing. I have a lot of interests that aren't exactly mainstream, so this may remain more or less anonymous for now. Again, we'll see.
